POST-DOCTORAL FELLOWSHIP IN SOCIAL SCIENCE
The school for biomedical sciences at College of Health Sciences, Makerere University, Uganda, offers a European Commission-funded postdoctoral fellowship. The aim of the fellowship is to support and nurture a cohort of early career researchers who will work on the CAGE-TB project.
About CAGE-TB Project
The Cough Audio triaGE for TB (CAGE-TB) project aims to promote the adoption of mobile health-based cough audio triage testing for active pulmonary tuberculosis in health facilities in high-burden settings. Its aims are to generate and separately validate a cough audio classifier that meets World Health Organization (WHO) triage test target product profile sensitivity and specificity criteria, produce data on potential cost savings, and package the underlying technology into an easy-to-use smartphone app built using human-centered design ready-for-use in large-scale clinical evaluations. It will do so through:

The postdoctoral fellow will be part of a team involved in the development of a research agenda that interrogates the TB triage and diagnostic policies, practices and service delivery, and care for TB patients in Kampala.
Successful candidates will be expected to;-
- Participate fully in the life of the program and contribute to the research environment at The College of Health sciences at Makerere University, for the duration of the project;
- Undertake fieldwork for six months in the country
- Develop research and ethical protocols based on best practice guidelines;
- Produce both individual and co-authored publications;
- Assist in the supervision of junior researchers and PhD fellows
- Present papers at aligned conferences and;
- Primarily work as part of a research team within and outside of the College of health sciences
Minimum Qualifications
- Hold a Ph.D. degree in Anthropology, or cognate discipline awarded within the last 5 years;
- Proficient in qualitative and experience in conducting ethnographic research
Have excellent communication, presentation, and writing skills in English.
- Demonstrated ability to communicate complex findings to an audience with varied disciplinary backgrounds;
Other Desirables
- Willingness and ability to work independently and to collaborate with a multidisciplinary and international team;
- Socially engaged, highly motivated to understand social dynamics, autonomous and creative.
- The willingness to be part of an international research team.
- Experience in undertaking data collection in primary care settings;
- Has taken a leading role in at least one article published in an international peer-reviewed journal (i.e. first author added advantage);
- Familiarity with TB diagnosis, diagnostic challenges, and care in a low- middle-income country;
- Interest in mobile health and/or digital health interventions or diagnostics to support health services.

About the CAGE-TB project

- Collecting cough audio data in a discovery cohort of patients with a prolonged cough who present to primary care clinics in Kampala, and optimizing a classifier scheme;
- Validating the audio classifier algorithm in separate clinical validation cohorts in Kampala, Uganda, and calculating potential cost savings; and
- Using a human-centered design process to integrate the classifier into a smartphone application and identifying potential barriers and facilitators to its successful deployment
We have a job opening for a Research assistant to help develop exciting formative research on TB triage and diagnostic policies, practices and service delivery, and attitudes and experience with technology among health care providers in Kampala. The goal of this work was to generate implementation recommendations that would inform the mobile application design process
Key Responsibilities
- Undertake desk research and document analysis;
- Mapping of facilities
- Conducting observation at the facilities
- Conducting interviews
- Transcription and coding
- Assist in data analysis
- Contribute to project team and meetings.
Selection criteria
Minimum Qualifications and other Desirables for the Job
- Completed a Master in social science – sociology, anthropology, or a related discipline;
- Excellent skills in qualitative data collection, and analysis as exemplified in the master thesis or other research projects previously conducted;
- Fluent in English, both spoken and written;
- Strong communicative and interpersonal skills and a flexible and supportive attitude toward colleagues;
- Interest in, and previous experience with, the field of TB (or related fields) is a plus.
Terms and conditions
We offer a full-time position for a period of one year until 28 February 2024, with the possibility of a 6-month extension. Ideally, the starting date will be as soon as possible.
